Ronaldo to quit Real Madrid after fraud accusation

Cristiano Ronaldo has been left so angry by the treatment he has received from authorities after being hit with a tax fraud lawsuit by Spanish prosecutors that he want to quit Real Madrid and leave the country. At least, that is the claim adorning the front page of Portuguese publication A Bola.

Ronaldo stands accused of defrauding the Spanish treasury after allegedly using a business structure to hide €14.7m in income earned from his image rights between 2011 and 2014, but maintains he has done nothing wrong.

On Friday morning A Bola suggested that Ronaldo has made an ‘irreversible’ decision to leave Spain as a result of what has transpired.

Real have already put their support firmly behind Ronaldo, issuing a public statement on Wednesday that read in part, ” Real Madrid C.F. are absolutely convinced that our player, Cristiano Ronaldo, will prove his total innocence in this process.”

But Ronaldo has apparently told Los Blancos president Florentino Perez that he wants out.

It is worth noting that a similar kind of rumours occasionally emerged regarding Lionel Messi and a possible Barcelona exit when he was being investigated for tax fraud – a crime he and his father were eventually found guilty of and each given suspended prison sentences.

In another sensational report that perhaps questions the validity of this new story, A Bola only recently claimed that Paris Saint-Germain, Monaco, Manchester United and unnamed Chinese clubs were ready to start banging on Real Madrid’s door with huge world record €180m bids for Ronaldo.

Ronaldo remains under contract with Real until 2021, when he will be 36 years of age.
